Adoration of the Magi at Lincoln Cathedral

Located on the south side of the choir, on the upper level of the twenty-third stall, this decoration on the “misericord” (the hinged seat support) depicts the Adoration of the Magi. At the centre, the Virgin Mary is lying on a bed covered with a drape, with the ox and donkey crouching before her. Mary holds the infant Jesus in her arms, while the three Wise Men present themselves before her with their gifts: one is kneeling in a gesture of respect, while the other two wear crowns. Unfortunately, the heads of the Virgin and the Child are now damaged. On either side of the central scene are two angelic figures seated on benches: the left angel is playing a small portable organ, while the one on the right holds his arms raised. To complete the decoration of the stall, a man’s head is carved on the armrest.
