Records exist of a Gothic carved choir stall made at the beginning of the second half of the fourteenth century with the participation of the artist Aloi de Montbrai. Comparing and studying the style of the bishop’s throne with the rest of the stalls, it is excluded that master Aloi intervened in anything more than the bishop’s throne alone; moreover, a document of 1352 exists in which Ferrer de Groins is named as “engaged in finishing the choir of the cathedral.”
This choir disappeared when it was replaced by another of the sixteenth century, according to the historian Oliver or according to Pere de Palol in the eighteenth century, as cited by Lourdes Fonoyet. Francesc Rius says: “In the chapter archive of the cathedral, the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries were also mentioned as the probable date of construction of the new ashlar masonry.”
Of the fourteenth-century choir, only the episcopal chair and some backs with carved figures of musical angels are preserved in the cathedral.
When the last choir was dismantled, the three-sided masonry wall containing the voussoir at the centre of the nave was also demolished. It remained in the cathedral for some years until, in the early 1960s, the historian and notary of La Garriga, Josep Mauri i Serra, took charge of thirty-four backs and created a Foundation-Museum in his private home to display them together with other pieces from his extensive collection. Only the upper part of the backs has been preserved, pieces of 70 × 64 cm, most of which depict two musical angels.
