Sculptural Tondo with Nine Musical Angels

This sculptural relief, originally conceived as a large tondo composed of four quadrants, presents a celestial choir of nine angels. Although the upper-left quadrant has been lost, the surviving composition shows the divine figures engaged in various musical and celebratory activities: two of them are playing a lute and a portable organ respectively, while a third angel is caught in the act of singing. Some members of the group hold parchment scrolls in their hands, probably bearing sacred texts or musical scores, thus completing the representation of a complex and harmonious angelic liturgy.
