Coronation of the Virgin at Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris

On relief number 5 of the north wall of the choir, within a richly decorated frame of leaf motifs, the scene of the Coronation of the Virgin is carved. Mary, wearing a veil and crown, is seated on a bench beside Christ. Although time has damaged the figures — the heads of both and the right hand of Jesus have been lost — the solemnity of the gesture can be sensed: Christ rests his left hand on what appears to be a globe, a symbol of his power over the world. In the upper part of the composition, two seated angels accompany the event by playing their instruments, among which a small portable organ can clearly be distinguished. The decoration of the area is completed in the spandrels of the wall, where ornaments depicting various animals are found.
