Coronation of the Virgin with Three Musical Angels

In this Coronation scene, Christ and the Virgin Mary are seated together on a single throne covered with a precious drape. Christ, whose halo is decorated with a cross and the inscription “XPE” (Christ), is caught in the moment of placing the crown on his Mother’s head with both hands. Mary is depicted veiled and with her hands crossed on her chest in a gesture of acceptance. Accompanying this sacred moment are five angels, three of whom are playing various instruments of the period: a violin, a hand-operated small organ and a psaltery. All figures are surrounded by decorated haloes and the work bears an inscription with the precise date of 1355.
